The Notebook is a book written by Nicholas Sparks in 1996. It is a novel that was also adapted to the screens, in 2004, by Nick Cassavetes, and later becoming one very sucessful and awarded movie.
The story is very touching and begins with an elderly man visiting an old woman that currently lives in a hospital due to her lost of memory. Though we don't previously know, this man comes everyday with the same book, to read it to her during her mornings and afternoons. At first, the woman, Allie, doesn't question the origin of the book or who wrote it, even though we can see that it was handwritten. During the storytelling the woman starts feeling that the story that she's hearing, she has heard it before, and not only heard it but also lived it. She then begins to understand that the book that is being read to her was written by herself, because she knew she was sick and forgetful, but didn't want to forget the amazing life and lovestory that she had live. She then, at the end of the day and for just a few minutes, can recognize that the man reading to her is in fact her loving husband and she remembers everything. In this moment of clarity she also remembers that he has been going to visit her every single day, and every single day reading this book to her. She cries to the thought of how much she misses him and their kids, who don't have the same hope has their father about her mother recovering of memory. Between tears she thanks him and asks him to keep coming and to keep reminding her. Because that book is all the memory she has left. The book takes a very important role in this couple's life because is the only source of memory for Allie to remember her life and her loved ones. Each day this book provides the couple happiness and joy, through a detailed description of their love story that, against every odds, can make Allie remember things, even if just for mere seconds.
In real life, besides fiction, this can also happen and it's amazing. People that are beyond recovery, with no hope once however, can experience similar episodes by the reading of a text or poem written by themselves, or even simply a book that took an important part of their lives, and they can extraordinarely make them remember things, even when medically they were diagnosed as incurable. Books can really change people's lifes, and can help each person in infinite different ways.
